Visiting the Statue of Liberty in NY
The Statue of Liberty is located in Liberty Island. The only way to get to the island is via ferries operated by Statue Cruises (private vessels are not permitted). The ferries leave from two locations: Battery Park in Manhattan, and Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. I was staying in Manhattan so I took my ferry at Battery Park. Once you get to the park you can buy the tickets inside the park at the ticket booth. The tickets give you access to both Liberty Island and Ellis Island. I would recommend buying the tickets in advance. A great way to save money is to get a City Pass Card. There are several ones just make sure you buy what your going to use is a waste if you are only visiting one or two attactions but if your spending a few days and visiting several places it would be worth it. If you have bought tickets in advance there is a separate line (shorter) for you to pick up the passes. This passes only allow access to the island. If you want access to the crown, the pedestal, the museum, and the Fort Wood level you need to make advanced reservations. If you are planning your trip with enough time in advance you can get these passes but the wait is usually several months. Once you board the ferry if is cold I would suggest staying downstairs because it can be very cold upstairs. Also be aware if the sea is choppy, you will fell it so be aware of motion sickness. There are also sits upstairs but be aware that people will stand in front of you and you will not get a good view. The island is small and is walked in a matter of minutes. However, plan to spend at least 30+ minutes because you will want to take many photos; the Statue beautiful and the view to the Manhattan is amazing.
